Tim Cahill the hero as Australia edge past Syria to book World Cup play-off spot

Tim Cahill has kept alive Australia’s World Cup dream

Tuesday, October 10, 2017

Syria’s World Cup dream has been ended by Australia in dramatic fashion.

The minnows, having claimed a 1-1 draw in the first leg of the Asian qualifying tie, were on course for a stunning upset when Al Somah gave them an early lead in the return match at the ANZ Stadium in Sydney on Tuesday night.

But Tim Cahill drew Australia level with a trademark header and then repeated the feat late in extra-time to seal a 3-2 aggregate win for the Socceroos.

Australia will now face the fourth-place team in the Concacaf region – likely to be Panama or Honduras – in a two-legged play-off for a place in the World Cup finals.
